Color Consistency Across Views

Definition & Challenge:
Color consistency refers to maintaining uniform hue, saturation, and luminance across all viewing angles in autostereoscopic displays. Variations arise due to:

  1. Optical Layer Effects –
    • Lenticular lenses or parallax barriers diffract light differently per view, causing angular color shift (e.g., blue/yellow tinting).
    • Polarization artifacts in some designs may alter perceived color.
  2. Pixel-Level Non-Uniformity –
    • Subpixel rendering for multiple views can introduce view-dependent color errors, especially near viewing zone edges.
  3. Backlight Interactions –
    • Directional backlights (e.g., for head-tracking) may create spectral non-uniformity at oblique angles.

Measurement & Mitigation:

  • Per-view colorimetry (using goniophotometers).
  • Calibration algorithms to compensate for angular color drift.
  • Hybrid optical designs (e.g., combined diffuser-lenticular layers) to smooth gradients.
